  1. One of the best comedy clubs in Los Angeles is Dynasty Typewriter. The Hayworth Theatre, a 200-seat performance space on Wilshire Boulevard, relaunched in 2017 as comedy venue Dynasty Typewriter. The venue has absorbed much of the top-notch programming from NerdMelt and the Trepany House at the Steve Allen Theater following the closure of those two venues.

Since opening in 2018, Dynasty Typewriter has quickly established itself as one of LA's premier destinations for highly curated entertainment including comedy, music, live podcasts, screenings, and immersive experiences. Named “LA’s comedy clubhouse” by The NY Times, and “LA’s best alt-comedy venue” by LA Weekly, Dynasty prides itself on creating enchanting, connective experiences for artists and audiences alike. Most importantly, it is home to DynaPop! popcorn, voted “Best Popcorn on the West Coast” by Popcorn Magazine. 2. It was the first all-stand-up comedy nightclub in the world. It was Mitzi who coined the name "The Comedy Store". It quickly become a hot club on the Strip where the famous comedian friends of Sammy and Rudy, such as Redd Foxx, Tim Conway, Buddy Hackett, and Jonathan Winters could "work out" new sets or just relax among friends before setting out on their national and worldwide tours. For newcomers starting a career in comedy, The Comedy Store was a one-stop shop to watch all the greats on stage. As luck would have it, the Comedy Store was born the same month that Johnny Carson moved the Tonight Show from New York to Los Angeles and a flood of comics immediately followed Johnny out West, hoping to get their shot on his show.

It was Mitzi who deemed this place to be more than just a nightclub, but rather an "artist’s colony" designed to develop the unique art form of stand-up comedy and to create a family-like environment where stand-ups can develop their craft and then "pay it forward" by mentoring newer comics that follow behind them.

  3. Largo at the Coronet is one of the best comedy clubs in Los Angeles. Although the address has changed and the dinner menu has gone (it's now snacks only), the performers remain the same at Los Angeles's home for cultured, bankable singer-songwriters and brilliant comedians, relocated to a '40s theatre. Aimee Mann, John Doe, Jill Sobule, and perennial hot-ticket artist-in-residence Jon Brion ply their trade in the 280-seat theater. Largo was founded by Jean-Pierre Boccara, a nightclub entrepreneur, in 1989. The LA Weekly named Cafe Largo "LA's Best Supper Club" in 1990.

Most nights, Largo rounds up a consistently stellar stable of comedy talent, from showcases hosted by Patton Oswalt, Nick Kroll, and Sarah Silverman to the occasional transcendent set by the likes of Tig Notaro. In Largo at the Coronet, there's a good mix of music and comedy on various nights. Which probably attracts writers from Judd Apatow, Sarah Silverman, Kevin Nealon, to Lindsey Buckingham.

  4. The Elysian is an independent comedy theater and non-profit based in the Elysian Valley of Los Angeles. At the Elysian, they believe all great work comes out of experimentation and they’re far more interested in the artist’s process than their finished product. The Elysian's goal is to foster a supportive space, audience, and community that allows artists to enact their unique creative vision.

The non-profit was originally founded in 2018 when a group of emerging performers and comedians came together at The Lyric Hyperion Theater in Silverlake, CA. Informed by the ethos of clowns, they embraced an approach of devising new works live in front of audiences, risking vulnerability and failure as a means of discovering gold. The theater became a destination for those seeking innovative, original live comedy that was unexpected, transgressive, participatory, and communal. A creative culture grew that offered artists of all disciplines a place to experiment and test boundaries away from the influence of the local entertainment industry and develop shows that would go on to tour the world and win festivals.

  6. Among the best comedy clubs in Los Angeles is Groundlings Theatre. In 1972, Gary Austin assembled a group of performers in Los Angeles who just wanted to work on their craft. Together they would improvise, and perform monologues, scenes, characters, songs, dances, and classic plays. After about a year, they started doing performances and inviting friends to come and watch. Word got out about the workshop, more people started coming, and soon a core group of performers began to showcase their material at various venues around Hollywood.

    The
Groundlings spent four years battling red tape, building codes, and parking restrictions before any shows would appear on that stage. During that time, The Groundlings performed their revues at a handful of theatres all over town, including The Improv, The Matrix, The Hollywood Canteen, and the White House. Finally, in April of 1979, the revitalized 99-seat theatre was finally able to open its doors to audiences. The holy hall of improvisational and character-based sketch comedy operates as a popular theater alongside its extensive program of improv classes. Kathy Griffin, Will Ferrell, Phil Hartman, and innumerable Saturday Night Live cast members have all shot to stardom from here.

  7. The World Famous Laugh Factory comedy club is home to the stars of stand-up comedy! Since opening its doors in 1979, the World Famous Laugh Factory has been recognized as "the #1 comedy club in the country" by such high-profile media as USA Today. They're in the business to make you laugh! The locations include the Sunset Strip in Hollywood, Downtown Long Beach, Inside the Las Vegas Tropicana Hotel Resort & Casino, and in Chicago's Lakeview neighborhood.

This Sunset Strip staple is where Dave Chappelle and Dane Cook once had a competition to see who could perform the longest. It's where an audience member captured Michael Richards and his racist rant on video. It’s the home of Kevin Nealon's weekly talk show. In a nutshell, the Laugh Factory is where to go if you want to see comedy celebrities. Its round glowing orange sign is an iconic image synonymous with LA comedy. The Laugh Factory itself, at this point, is almost a celebrity, as is its owner, Jamie Masada. You'll need to spring for VIP tickets to guarantee a seat.

In this converted Macaroni Grill in beautiful downtown Burbank, you can stop in at about any time of night, any day of the week (save for Mondays), and see comics at all levels: From celebrities (Greg Proops, Brad Garett, Harland Williams), to features and beginners.
