    Still Sick

While many (unquestionably great) yuri manga are set in high school, Still Sick stands out by being set in an office and centered on a pair of adult women: Shimizu (29) and Maekawa (28). Shimizu has been working in an office for several years, but in her spare time she enjoys writing and drawing yuri fanfiction manga based on her favorite anime. She sells her fanzines at conventions as well.

At one of these conventions, she runs into her coworker, Maekawa, who claims she accidentally entered the wrong event hall while looking for another convention in the same building. When Maekawa discovers Shimizu's secret, the tables quickly turn, and Shimizu discovers that Maekawa was once a promising mangaka who gave up after becoming discouraged by her work and her father's words. While the two bond over their shared love of creating manga, their bond is not easily strengthened, as Shimizu is eager to entice Maekawa back into the world of manga creation, but her friend is resistant.

As their professional relationship evolves and their friendship grows, so does the possibility of romance. While Shimizu has always enjoyed yuri manga, she has never admitted to being a lesbian. Until now, that is. It doesn't take her long to realize she has romantic feelings for Maekawa, but what does that mean for their friendship and professional relationship? This is a mature and grounded yuri manga from a talented creator, one that distinguishes itself by offering readers a more gradual and uneven narrative that is true to life while remaining wonderfully uplifting.

    Failed Princesses

Failed Princesses is a rewarding slow-burn yuri manga that begins with sparks of friendship rather than love. Fujishiro Nanaki, a popular girl, makes no secret of her desire to be seen as the cutest, prettiest girl in the room. Kurokawa Kanade, an otaku wallflower, is the polar opposite. Kanade, a bookworm and BL manga fan, enjoys her unassuming life and the friends with whom she can share her interests. However, when Nanaki's boyfriend of three months reveals that she was only ever his bit on the side when he was caught cheating, the two girls are forced together.

Their at-school breakup wasn't as private as they thought—Kanada overheard everything and rushed over to console Nanaki. As a result, an unlikely friendship develops, in which the popular girl notices the cute, endearing side of the wallflower and wants to get closer to her, while the wallflower digs her heels in but still moves closer. Will their budding friendship turn into a budding romance as they spend more time together and influence one another's lives? Ajiichi's expressive art and narrative flow, combined with Angela Liu's funny, charming translation work, make this a wonderfully rewarding yuri manga to check out.

  3. Our Teachers are Dating! is an unapologetic sickly-sweet yuri manga, a steady stream of dopamine, tender moments, awkward but endearing comedy, and a few very sexy scenes. This is a lesbian manga that doesn't waste any time getting started. The protagonists, who work at an all-girls school, have already begun dating by the time the manga begins. Terano teaches biology, and Hayama teaches gym at the school. Their coworkers have been rooting for them since they first met, and it has finally come true. You can only sit back and watch their romance blossom.

You follow these two awkward but sincere lovers as they fall deeper and deeper into something very special, from their first kiss to their first time in bed together. This is primarily a fantasy romance. A manga that appears to take place in a world devoid of men, where homophobia is non-existent and everyone is always rooting for love

There is no drama, no obstacles, no maybes—just love, sex, and joy. Our Teachers Are Dating! provides readers with pure escapism as well as a satisfying amount of spice. It's not true to life, but that's fine. It's a fantasy that you can all enjoy, full of confessions and firsts and supported by some stunning artwork with dynamic angles and inventive panel layouts. This is the one for you if you want your yuri manga to be full of escapism, sweetness, and charm.

    Citrus

If you've done any previous research into, or have already dabbled in, yuri manga, you'll be familiar with Citrus. This is without a doubt one of the most popular lesbian manga series of all time. Citrus manga's popularity may come as a surprise, given that its premise is initially reminiscent of more smutty manga and harem manga. Citrus begins with Yuzu, a fashion-obsessed and upbeat high school student who transfers to a strict girls' school after her mother remarries.

Yuzu quickly makes enemies at this school, the most important of which is Mei, the student body president. Mei is distant, cold, and intimidating. She also happens to be Yuzu's new stepsister. Some readers may be put off by the prospect of a budding, troubled, and smoky romance between step-sisters, but trust Saburouta. Citrus is an essential Yui manga because of its implausible plot, sheer melodrama, and the larger-than-life personalities of its opposing yet love-struck characters. You'll want to see the journey from enemies to family to lovers. The art is also vibrant, with excellent use of grayscale and large, expressive faces reminiscent of shoujo manga from the 1990s.

    Bloom Into You

Bloom Into You is an easy, sweet, cute, and wholesome introduction to the world of yuri manga, often feeling like a greatest hits collection of lesbian romance themes, tropes, and characters. Bloom Into You is one of today's most popular yuri manga, and for good reason. This popularity was boosted in 2018 by Studio Troyca's lovely anime adaptation of this manga. Bloom Into You follows Yuu Koito, a high school girl who is obsessed with the stories found in shoujo manga. She fantasizes about someone confessing their love to her. But, much to her chagrin, when a boy does, she feels nothing and rejects him.

When Yuu's senpai and student council member Touko Nanami also declines a love confession, Yuu sees the beginnings of a possible kinship. And it blossoms when Touko soon confesses her feelings for Yuu. Touko then runs for student council president and wins, with Yuu as her campaign manager. As president, Touko seeks to revive the student council play, which causes friction between her and Yuu. Bloom Into You is a warm and sweet yuri manga. Its drama is grounded and relatable, rather than exaggerated. Its characters are both humble and endearing.

  6. Mangaka Kodama Naoko is a yuri manga legend. Her series NTR - Netsuzou Trap is a steamy and sexy yuri manga about two childhood friends who, while preparing for romance, quickly realize they only have eyes (and hands) for each other. Kodama Naoko has taken a lighter approach to the yuri manga genre with I Married My Best Friend to Shut My Parents Up (a manga with a name to rival the silliest of light novels and a cover reminiscent of Nagata Kabi's manga).

To begin with, the art is bright and expressive, which aids in exuding that lighter, sweeter tone with pitch-perfect accuracy. In terms of the plot, the title does a lot of the heavy lifting. This is the story of Machi, a young office worker whose parents are pressuring her to marry, settle down, and enter traditional adult life. Machi agrees to a sham marriage with her friend and underclassman, Hana, who is currently living with her and has a crush on her, in order to stop her parents in their tracks. Machi's conservative parents are disgusted by the match, and as the title promises, they are successfully silenced for the time being.

However, Machi learns over time that she is happy in this marriage; that it gives her everything she never knew she wanted; and that she was happy to upset her parents and the status quo because she is now living a previously hidden truth. This is not a revolutionary or lengthy story. This is a one-volume manga with only a few chapters. It's a charming, succinct, and joyful yuri manga that serves as yet another excellent introduction to the genre.

  7. A lot of yuri manga is aimed at teenagers and younger readers (hence why it often falls under the umbrella of shoujo manga). When a manga like Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon comes along, it's refreshing. Doughnuts in the Shape of a Crescent Moon follows Hinako, a young office worker who struggles with self-esteem. She hides it behind a fashionable, put-together exterior, but on the inside, she is desperate for love, affection, and a normal, logical life.

Why does what she seeks—what other people seem to find so easily and frequently—appear to be impossible for her? Anyone who is queer but took a while to realize it (like myself and many others) will identify strongly with this feeling. Why can't Hianko find a man, fall into a happy relationship, marry, and settle down? The answer comes when she is daydreaming about her female coworker, Asahi.

Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon, like the novels of Japanese author Sayaka Murata, is about not fitting into the restrictive, heteronormative mold that society has carved out for you. It's a touching yuri manga with wholesome moments and well-developed characters. It takes its time and is therefore better for it. Doughnuts Under a Crescent Moon will strike a particularly sympathetic chord with any queer reader who discovered their sexuality as an adult.

  8. Whisper Me a Love Song is a fascinating and deceptively complicated shoujo manga. At first glance, it appears to be a sweet young Yuri love story. However, it also has a lot to say about various interpretations of love. Himari is a young high schooler who falls in love with her senpai's voice during a musical performance and tells Yori that she "fell in love at first sight."

Yori interprets this as Himari liking and wanting to date her, which is not the case. It's a case of miscommunication, but with the potential for growth and blossoming. From here, you get to spend a lot of time with these two young girls. You get to know them as individuals while also watching their relationship develop and change. Eku Takeshima's artwork is among the best in the yuri manga genre. Whisper Me a Love Song is full of life and texture. Her character designs harken back to the Shoujo manga era of the 1990s while also being uniquely her own.

    Our Wonderful Days

While many yuri manga can be classified as slice-of-life shoujo manga, Our Wonderful Days is perhaps the most obvious example. This manga depicts the everyday, sweet lives of four high school girls in the Japanese countryside. You'll get the vibes described if you're a fan of the manga or anime Laid Back Camp. Our Wonderful Days, on the other hand, is a yuri manga that seamlessly and beautifully blends the slice-of-life and shoujo-ai genres.

    Our Wonderful Days
is possibly the most beautifully drawn manga on this site. Hamuro's character art, facial expressions, and depictions of peaceful, calming rural life are unparalleled. Our Wonderful Days is a pseudo-episodic manga that spans only eighteen chapters (or three volumes). It focuses on the four protagonists' daily lives and growing relationships. Two of the protagonists were elementary school friends until one moved away. Now that she's returned, a romance is slowly blossoming. This is a yuri manga that, as the title suggests, depicts the ordinary beauty of everyday life in a rural town. This is a lovely, soothing, and warming manga that is essential for fans of slice-of-life and yuri manga.

  10. Another delightfully drawn manga with a simple but heartwarming premise is A Tropical Fish Year for Snow. A high schooler being forced to join a club is a trope we've seen a hundred times in shoujo and shounen. It frequently results in confusion, shenanigans, and new friends. The same can be said of A Tropical Fish Yearns for Snow.

Konatsu Amano's father has relocated to another country for work, so his daughter has had to leave Tokyo to live with her aunt in a sleepy seaside town. A new town, a new school, and new friends await. Konatsu is stumped when she is required to join a club until she comes across the Aquarium Club and her new classmate Koyuki Honami, who begins by asking her, "Do you like salamanders?" Romance blossoms from here.

  11. Strawberry Shake Sweet is a yuri manga that ran from 2003 to 2008 and has since become a cult classic in the genre. This shoujo manga is only two volumes long, despite its five-year run, making it delightfully compact. Julia Tachibana, the protagonist, is a young idol and a shining talent of Shanghai Talent Limited. She takes on Ran Asakawa, a new talent whom she is initially envious of but quickly falls for.

The story follows the life of a young manga artist named Julia Tachibana, who is known for creating erotic manga. However, after facing criticism for the explicit content of her work, Julia decides to start fresh and create a new manga series with a different genre. She chooses to delve into the world of shoujo manga and begins working on a story called "Strawberry Shake Sweet," which centers around a romance between two high school girls.

The series explores Julia's journey as she navigates the challenges of creating a new manga, deals with personal relationships, and discovers her own identity as an artist. It combines elements of comedy, romance, and drama, highlighting the growth and development of its characters.

    Octave

Octave is yet another absolute Yuri manga classic. And what distinguishes this manga from others is its rawness and maturity. Octave is not a happy-go-lucky story. It's difficult and, as a result, relatable. Yukino Miyashita, a former teen idol, is eighteen years old. She grew up with stars in her eyes and, at the age of fifteen, joined an idol group that had little success. She feels like a failure now, despite the fact that she is only eighteen years old. Yukino meets a former composer named Setsuko Iwai, with whom she falls in love after deciding to return home and reassess her life.

This is a gritty manga about a man who realizes that life is worth living, no matter what. Life continues and changes shape after failure and disappointment, and that's okay. Yukino is a fantastically realized protagonist, and Setsuko is much more than a love interest. Haru Akiyama creates her characters with care and love. They are authentic, tragic, flawed, aspirational, terrified, hurt, and vulnerable, and you will love them for it.
