In the early 1960s, Ban Ki-moon made the decision to take part in an English-language competition. Since he was still in high school, he decided to create the greatest essay possible and submit it. He didn't really give this essay much thought, but soon after, he learned that he had won the American Red Cross competition. And it led him to the White House, where he met American President John F. Kennedy; Ban claimed that this encounter was what spurred him to enter politics.

He has said that his life dramatically transformed after receiving the honor and traveling to the US. In reality, when he met American President John F. Kennedy, he began to reflect on the future and made the decision that he wanted to work as a diplomat. When he discussed this with the President, John F. Kennedy actually urged him to stay involved in politics and activism because he thought highly of Ban Ki-moon.

Ban Ki-moon began working for the South Korean Ministry of Foreign Affairs in 1970. He eventually earned his master's degree a few years later. When deciding where to go for his first foreign assignment, Ban Ki-moon reportedly picked India over the United States because he believed he would be able to maintain his family financially there. He was able to save a small amount of money each month in India and transfer it to his family, who at the time needed it desperately as South Korea was still getting over its internal troubles.

His appointment as South Korea's deputy ambassador to the United States a few years later meant that this wasn't really a problem for him. In actuality, Ban Ki-moon has a solid and significant relationship with North America, particularly with the United States. He has resided there for a while. He was then given the opportunity to serve as South Korea's ambassador to Slovenia and Austria. Finally, Ki-moon was appointed as South Korea's Foreign Minister in 2004, a position he took extremely seriously.

One of the interesting facts about Ban Ki-moon is that he founded the United Nations Women, a brand-new organization within the UN, which is one of his biggest accomplishments. When Ban Ki-moon was chosen to serve as the eighth Secretary-General of the United Nations in 2006, he had to carry on the legacy of Kofi Annan and other significant leaders in international politics. Despite the difficulty of the undertaking, he was able to win the election by receiving all of the votes from the UN council. Throughout his tenure as Secretary-General, he was really loved. He was so well-liked in fact that in 2011, he won reelection for his second and last term, which he served in until December 31st, 2016. As he got older and desired to spend more time with his close family, he stated at the time that he intended to retire from the world and public life.
