Austral Bricks
A group of businessmen and builders led by Edwin Spackman formed the Austral Brick Company in 1908. By the onset of World War I in 1914, the company had established itself as a prominent participant in the brick industry.
The name Austral Bricks became associated with the remarkable character of William King Dawes, whose influence over Austral Bricks and Brickworks Limited lasted for nearly half a century, riding the boom of the 1920s and steering a course through the Depression years. Austral Bricks may not have survived the severe economic collapse of the Great Depression if it hadn't been for Dawes.
