Bailey & Izlet, Inc.
In 1941, Wilfred Bailey and George M. Izett were the founders of Bailey & Izett, Inc. George M. Isett learned how to make clubs from Ben Sayers in Gullan, Scotland. At the age of 23, he left Scotland and emigrated to the United States.
He was hired as a senior professional golfer at the Merion Cricket Club and as a club builder and senior assistant to George Sayers, son of Ben Sayers (then the present Merion Cricket Club and the present Merion Golf Club were single clubs in two different regions). George M. Isett turned PGA Pro and was appointed Chief Pro at Seaview Golf Club in New Jersey. George M. worked at Seaview, making wooden planks for the golf wholesaler at the Wannamakers Department Store.
The head of this department was Wilfred Bailey. Bailey & Izett was formed as a result of Wanamaker's decision to exit its wholesale golf division. In the 1930s, golf clubs were only available at private golf courses and Wanamaker's golf retailers. Prior to 1940, Wanamaker also had a wholesale golf division, supplying local club professionals with clubs for sale to members. Most club professionals have expected experienced club leaders, but this is not always the case. When Wanamaker decided to close its wholesale golf division, they informed Wilfred Bailey that they would fire him and close the division.
Wilfred Bailey contacted George M. and asked if he would like to continue forming the club and partnering with him to form a company. George M. loved creating clubs and agreed to join forces with Wilfred Bailey to continue operating under the company name Bailey & Izett, Inc.
