Belilena Caves
Belilena is a large, famous cave from which proof of human existence has been recorded, believed to be from a time as early as 32,000 years ago. A Sri Lankan palaeontologist named Paul Deraniyagala found the skeletons of ten people at Belilena, and their stays have been attributed to the “Balangoda Man”, an early prehistoric ancestor of Sri Lanka’s indigenous people, who're stated to have lived at excessive altitudes as much as about 600m above sea level. The Archeological Department of Sri Lanka excavated and explored Belilena Cave between 1978 and 1983, coming across human remains in addition to gadgets of cultural significance including bone gear, stone gear and proof of fire. Some of those are shown up to 30,000 years ago.
To go to Belilena Cave, site visitors want to stroll via the Makandawa Forest Reserve. The cave is placed 2000 ft above sea level, and site visitors would require the usage of a rope or rope ladder. A brief distance from the mouth of the cave is a lake, past which stays elements of the cave machine that have not begun to be explored.
