Benadryl
Benadryl contains diphenhydramine, an antihistamine. It works by blocking the effects of histamine, a chemical that causes allergic reactions such as sneezing, itching, runny nose, and watery eyes. It also helps to thin and loosen the mucus in the respiratory tract, making it easier to cough out. Benadryl is used to treat cough, cold, and allergy symptoms. It can also be used to treat hives, skin rash, and itching.
Benadryl is available over-the-counter in different forms such as syrup, tablets, capsules, and liquid. The usual dose of Benadryl for adults and children above 12 years is 25 to 50 mg every 4 to 6 hours. It may cause side effects such as drowsiness, dry mouth, dizziness, and blurred vision. It may also interact with other medications or medical conditions. Benadryl should not be used in people who have glaucoma, heart disease, low blood pressure, or thyroid disorder.
