Chamonix-Mont-Blanc
France's Chamonix-Mont-Blanc is renowned as the destination for serious skiers. The term "resort" is arguably inappropriate because Chamonix was a vibrant village before it became a destination for fans of winter sports.
At an elevation of more than 1,000m, this ski area is located at the foot of Mont Blanc, the highest mountain in the Alps. This height makes Chamonix a popular choice for many skiers and ensures that there will be snow until the end of April.
The pedestrian-friendly town, which played host to the first winter Olympics in 1924, exudes alpine charm and offers plenty of beginner and intermediate runs despite the mountain's extreme reputation. The views alone are worth taking the Aiguille du Midi, the highest cable car in Western Europe. Skiers with experience can use a guide (Chamonix has the largest and oldest guiding organization in the world) to descend the legendary Vallée Blanche, a 12.4-mile glacier run in the center of the Mont-Blanc Massif, from the top.
