In 1910, Coco Chanel established the opulent French fashion business Chanel in Paris. The Wertheimer family owns it privately, and its corporate headquarters have been in London since 2018.

With a focus on luxury products, accessories, and ready-to-wear for women, Chanel licenses the use of its name and logo to Luxottica for eyeglasses. Chanel is recognized for transforming ready-to-wear and haute couture by swapping out rigid, corseted shapes for more practical clothing that women nevertheless found attractive.

The legendary Coco Chanel is credited as saying, "A girl should be two things: classy and fabulous." She could have been talking about her eponymous Chanel purses. All Chanel purses are effortlessly chic, coming in various hues, sizes, leathers, and designs. From the original Chanel purse, which debuted in 1929, to Karl Lagerfeld's signature take on the traditional flap bag, Chanel purses have long been the gold standard for style and refinement.

For more than 90 years, Coco Chanel and the business that carries her name have influenced the direction of fashion. The 2.55 Chanel bag was the first shoulder bag for stylish women of status and distinction that was socially acceptable when it was originally introduced. The Mademoiselle Lock, a straightforward twist fastening used on the shoulder Chanel bag, was suspended on a metal chain. Classic Chanel purses still have the recognizable, interlocking CC logo for the fastening.
