Cheat Lake

The lake was created in 1925 when West Penn Power Co. constructed a dam over the Cheat River to supply the 52-megawatt Lake Lynn Power Station, a hydroelectric generating plant. Initially known as Lake Lynn Cheat Lake was chosen as the reservoir's name by the Board on Geographic Names in 1976.

Cheat Lake is a reservoir on the Cheat River in Monongalia County, West Virginia, that is 13 miles (21 km) long. At the reservoir's river end, there are three marinas. They are Sunset Beach Marina, Edgewater Marina, and Cheat Lake Marina. The Lake has a surface area of around 1,730 acres (700 hectares) and a volume of roughly 128.016 cubic kilometers.

Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes here; the lake is especially well-known for its population of largemouth bass, but it also supports walleye, sunfish, catfish, and other species. There are multiple marinas available for anyone who wishes to utilize a larger boat, and visitors are welcome to fish from the dock at Cheat Lake Park or launch small boats there. There isn't any camping here, but there are restrooms, a playground, and a number of picnic areas.

It's great to explore the area around Cheat Lake and look for swimming holes and waterfalls. Additionally, you can go whitewater rafting on the Cheat River or rock climbing in the Cooper's Rock State Forest.
