Djinguereber Mosque of Timbuktu

The Djinguereber Mosque in Timbuktu was constructed by the Mali Empire in the fourteenth century under Mansa Musa. It is still a vital component of modern city life and is constructed from pounded dirt and wood.
However, when the extremist Ansar Dine group stormed the city in 2012, the mosque only sustained little damage. The gang destroyed Islamic shrines in the city that the Ansar Dine regarded to be sacrilegious as well as two of Djinguereber's tombs. The International Criminal Court prosecuted Ahmad al-Faqi al-Mahdi for harming these sites in 2016, marking the court's first case involving the destruction of cultural sites as a war crime.
