Dwell was founded in 2003 by design enthusiast Aamir Ahmad. The company was originally established in 2002 as Dwell Retail Ltd. and opened its first store in London the following year. In 2014, the company was acquired by British retail group DFS and became a subsidiary under the management of DFS, a leading British furniture group.

Dwell has started with the notion that it was difficult to find designer-inspired furniture at affordable price points. Originally, dwell was created for urban dwellers who wanted pieces that made a statement in their living spaces and a talking point with friends.
