Due to the abundant cold-water springs, which were thought to have therapeutic characteristics, the town, which was established in 1879, quickly rose to prominence as a resort destination. The entire city has now been included to the National Register of Historic Places in order to preserve its charmingly unique appearance and personality, even if its heyday has long since passed.
