Art Gensler founded the company in 1965. The company originally focused on corporate interiors, creating groundbreaking interiors for new office buildings. Since then, the architecture firm has diversified into many forms of architecture and design, including commercial office buildings, shopping malls, airports, educational institutions, entertainment complexes, planning and urban design, mission-critical facilities, consulting, brand design and other areas. Art Gensler opened offices in the United States in the 1970s and 1980s and overseas offices in the 1980s and 1990s. The first overseas offices were opened in London in 1988 and new offices in Tokyo and Hong Kong in 1993. In 2002, Gensler opened an office in Shanghai and established a permanent presence in China.In 2021, Gensler had revenues of $1.235 billion, the highest of any US architectural firm. As of 2021, Gensler has offices in 49 cities in 16 countries worldwide, serving customers in more than 100 countries.
