Gods of Jade and Shadow
Top 10 in Top 10 Best Magical Realism Novels
The majority of Silvia Moreno-works Garcia's involve some element of magic. Mexican Gothic, for example, is oozing with magic (albeit, as the title says, it's technically gothic horror). Moreno-Gods Garcia's of Jade and Shadow takes readers on a thrilling ride through Jazz Age Mexico. Casiopea, the protagonist, is going about her existence and dreaming of more when she comes into a curious box in her grandfather's chamber.
As one might anticipate, opening the box brings Casiopea's fate into conflict with that of the Mayan deity of death. They collaborate against his brother, and there is betrayal, adventure, and (of course) love along the way. Moreno-Garcia has written a magical realism novel that is very difficult to put down in Gods of Jade and Shadow.
