The frescoes, which rank among Goya's best creations, represent scenes from daily life in Madrid while simultaneously illustrating the theme of Saint Anthony's miraculous. The frescoes exhibit Goya's audacious aesthetic flair and ground-breaking painting methods. These paintings were created at a pivotal time in Goya's career and are regarded as early examples of modern art. To safeguard the frescoes, the chapel was proclaimed a national monument and is no longer used for worship.
