Grand Canyon Railway

The Grand Canyon Railway, one of the Most Scenic Train Rides in America, will take you 65 miles north through Kaibab National Forest to the South Rim of Grand Canyon National Park after picking you up in a restored antique rail car in Williams, Arizona. You'll go through various distinctive natural settings along the way, such as pinion and juniper woodlands, wide plains, and ponderosa pine forests. An already amazing voyage is made even more enjoyable by live music and theatrical cowboy rail robbery.

The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway constructed it; it was finished on September 17, 1901. The introduction of trains promoted tourism in the region, and the railway company played a key role in the development of Grand Canyon Village, a visitor center. The Grand Canyon Railway's passenger service was discontinued by the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway in July 1968, and the line's freight service was terminated in 1974 as a result of declining ridership brought on by the rise of the automobile.

The route was bought by private investors in 1988, the infrastructure were repaired, and passenger trains resumed service on September 17, 1989. Today, the railroad runs all year long and transports hundreds of passengers to and from the canyon each day.

In order to honor the contribution the railroad has made to American history, the entire Grand Canyon Railway has been included on the National Register of Historic Places.
