Grandfather Mountain State Park
Grandfather Mountain is the tallest peak in the Blue Ridge Mountains, and this state park offers visitors the opportunity to see the towering mountain up close. Near the summit at exactly one mile above sea level is the Mile High Swinging Bridge, a suspension bridge that extends for over 220 feet over a chasm that drops beneath.
A walk across this bridge is sure to get the adrenaline pumping, and you’ll see some pretty spectacular views along the way. For a more rustic, backcountry view of Grandfather Mountain, visitors can use one of the many nature trails or hiking trails that lead around the park and to the summit. Hikes in the area can range from leisurely to challenging, but all will reward you with gorgeous panoramic views.
The Wildlife Habitats at Grandfather are where you can see wild animals close up in their native settings without worrying about them coming after you! Grandfather is not a zoo, it is a place where rescued animals have found forever homes. You’ll find a few black bears, two beautiful bald eagles, majestic elk, and playful otters.
The park offers animal enrichment times during the day when you can observe them feeding and playing. It’s the perfect opportunity to learn a little more about these special animals. Either before or after visiting the animals in their habitats, take a walk through the Nature Museum. Here you’ll find educational exhibits about the history of Grandfather Mountain. The exhibits include gems and minerals found in the area, birds and plants of North Carolina, Native American relics, a model of the mountain, and photographs. If you have time, don’t miss the 30-minute documentary video inside the Auditorium.
