Gungu Festival
Within the framework of this Gungu festival, the Pende people commemorate their ancestors through masked dances, which are also used in the initiation rites of Pende men into their society. The blond men go through three initiations: mukanda, mungonge, and kela, all of which contain mystical and magical elements. Initiates can cut open their stomachs and dance while holding their internal organs, or they can stick a tree branch through their cheeks. Under the cover of darkness, humans transform into animals or perform other invisible magic.
As a most famous festival in the Congo, the festival brings together the best dancers and artists. Exciting dances, upbeat music and a variety of masks will feature in the 4-day music and dance festival. That is why the Gungu festival is called one of the biggest festivals in the Congo.
The Gungu festival, in particular, is one of the festivals that clearly reflects Congolese culture. In the Congo, this is also a Gungu festival.
