Halifax is both the largest municipality in Atlantic Canada and the capital of the Canadian province of Nova Scotia. The municipal population was 439,819 as of the 2021 Census, with 348,634 living in the urban area. The regional municipality is made up of Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, and Halifax County, four former municipalities that merged in 1996.
In Atlantic Canada, Halifax is a significant economic hub with a concentration of both public and private sector businesses. The Department of National Defence, Dalhousie University, Nova Scotia Health Authority, Saint Mary's University, the Halifax Shipyard, various levels of government, and the Port of Halifax are significant employers and economic drivers.
