Hampstead Heath Ponds, Hampstead
Getting into one of Hampstead's natural bathing ponds and bobbing around with the coots and moorhens may be the most bucolic way to cool off in London. There are three ponds to choose from (mixed, women's, and men's), each with its own distinct personality. The timeless pleasure of gently swishing through the water, with trees surrounding you and a bright blue sky above, is shared by all. The ponds are open from 7 a.m. to 8.15 p.m. during the summer, and reservations are required between midday and 4.45 p.m.
Swimming lessons cost £4.05, or £2.43 for a concession (cash or card payments are accepted). Most sessions require reservations. If the ponds reach maximum capacity during the 'free flow' sessions, they will operate on a one-in-one-out basis to avoid overcrowding. If you're not used to swimming in cold water, check out this article on cold water habituation. Be aware that the Lido's hours of operation are currently limited.
