Imam Hussain's Shrine, Karbala
Imam Hussain's Shrine, located in the heart of the city, is one of the world's first and largest Muslim pilgrimage sites. See Husayn Ibn Ali's (the third Shia Imam) ultimate resting place, a holy location revered by Muslims all around the world.
The shrine's border wall is surrounded with wooden gates with glass ornaments. The gates open into a courtyard with many "Iwans" along the walls, which is divided into smaller rooms or precincts. Husayn's burial is encased in a metal-mesh-like structure that may be located directly beneath the golden dome.
On the anniversary of the imam's death, millions of pilgrims flock to Ashura to pray and pay their respects to the renowned martyr.
