St. Petersburg, which has a long and illustrious architectural history, was first constructed to overshadow the gleaming capitals of its western European neighbors. Nevsky Prospekt alone is a mile-long tour through post-enlightenment Europe's architectural history. Turn around and you're in Vienna; turn around again and you're in Venice; turn around again and you're in Paris. Another well-known destination is Vladimir, the Russian capital from the 12th century, which is home to two UNESCO World Heritage Sites. Old churches and wooden homes can be found in Suzdal. The Novgorod Kremlin sometimes referred to as the Detinets, is a magnificent example of medieval construction. It also houses the Chamber of the Facets, the oldest palace in Russia. The Russian archbishops used this as their primary gathering place.
