International School of Yangon (ISY)
Founded in 1955, the International School of Yangon (ISY) is a leading institution, providing an American education to students from diverse backgrounds from kindergarten to grade 12. The school year at ISY begins on September 8, and ends in June, consistent with the standard academic calendar.
Governed by a 10-member board of directors, four of whom are elected by the ISY Association, ISY maintains a nonprofit and nonsectarian status. Parents or guardians of registered students automatically become members of the association, promoting a collaborative approach to school management.
ISY's curriculum, closely aligned with American standards, offers a wide variety of academic content and activities. It embraces international influences, presenting the International Baccalaureate (IB) Program in grades 11 and 12. The primary language of instruction is English, supplemented by additional languages such as Spanish, Mandarin, and French. Accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges and authorized by the International Baccalaureate Organization, ISY maintains rigorous educational standards, helping graduates gain acceptance to select universities worldwide.
Admissions at ISY include an online application process, with registration for students with special educational needs and English Learners depending on space and resource availability. In the 2023-2024 school year, ISY has a teaching staff of 135 people, including 70 teachers from 17 different nationalities, contributing to creating a rich and diverse learning environment. The student population began the school year at 433, spanning PreK through 12th grade, making ISY a dynamic learning hub.
ISY's campus is spread over an area of 4 acres, equipped with modern facilities for learning, arts and sports. The new playground installed in the summer of 2019 adds to the exciting atmosphere.
