Introduction to Solid State Chemistry

This first-year University chemistry course investigates the fundamental principles of the chemical bond through the study of solid properties. Properties like stiffness, electrical conductivity, thermal expansion, strength, and optical properties can teach you a lot about practical chemistry. AP Chemistry High School students and teachers are among the thousands of students who have completed and enjoyed the course.

You'll see how experts use their knowledge of periodic table trends to predict material properties. Because 3.091x is an engineering course, the emphasis is on applications and how materials are used. The course has been taught on campus for over forty years and is one of the largest classes at the MIT.

This Introduction to Solid State Chemistry course will cover the relationship between electronic structure, chemical bonding, and atomic order, as well as atomic arrangement characterization in crystalline and amorphous solids such as metals, ceramics, semiconductors, and polymers (including proteins). Organic chemistry, solution chemistry, acid-base equilibria, electrochemistry, biochemistry, chemical kinetics, diffusion, and phase diagrams will be covered in depth. Industrial practice (including the environmental impact of chemical processes), energy generation and storage (e.g., batteries and fuel cells), and emerging technologies will be used as examples (e.g., photonic and biomedical devices).
