Jay Leno
Jay Leno, real name James Douglas Muir Leno, is an American comedian and writer who hosted The Tonight Show from 1992 to 2009 and again from 2010 to 2014. Andover, Massachusetts is where Leno grew up. He performed as a stand-up comedian in bars while attending Emerson College in Boston, where he earned a degree in speech therapy. He worked as an opening act for celebrities such as Johnny Mathis and Tom Jones after arriving in Los Angeles. In 1977, Leno made his television debut on NBC's The Tonight Show, and ten years later, he became Johnny Carson's permanent guest host. NBC chose Leno over David Letterman to replace Carson when he retired in 1992. The Tonight Show and CBS's Late Show with David Letterman, which competed in the same time slot, developed a rivalry as a result of the choice.
