Jurassic Park
Jurassic Park, a 1993 science-fiction adventure film, directed by Steven Spielberg and based on Michael Crichton's novel of the same name, is set on a remote island off the coast of Costa Rica. Here, a wealthy entrepreneur, John Hammond, has developed a theme park with genetically-engineered dinosaurs.
The movie follows a group of scientists, including the paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant, the paleobotanist Dr. Ellie Sattler, and the mathematician Dr. Ian Malcolm, who are invited to the island to endorse the park. However, the visit takes a terrifying turn when the dinosaurs escape from their enclosures, putting the visitors in danger and revealing the perils of playing God.
Jurassic Park's pioneering use of computer-generated imagery (CGI) to bring the dinosaurs to life remains a standout feature of the film. The special effects were revolutionary at the time and still hold up today, creating believable and frightening creatures that appear to exist on screen.
Beyond its visual effects, Jurassic Park also boasts a cast of strong characters and excellent performances. Sam Neill, Laura Dern, and Jeff Goldblum deliver standout performances, imbuing their characters with depth and humor. Attenborough is also exceptional in his portrayal of Hammond, a man whose ambition and naivety drive him to bring the dinosaurs to life.
Samuel L. Jackson's role in Jurassic Park is that of Ray Arnold, the chain-smoking chief engineer responsible for keeping the park's systems running smoothly. While he doesn't have as much screen time as the other main characters, his performance is memorable and impactful, as his dry wit and gruff demeanor add a layer of realism to the film's tense and chaotic situations. He also delivers some of the film's funniest and most memorable lines, such as his iconic "hold onto your butts" before the power outage that allows the dinosaurs to escape their enclosures.
