Kim was given command over the Korean soldiers that were a part of the Soviet army during World War II. Korea was split between the US and the Soviet Union by the end of the war. The US occupied the southern portion, while the Soviet Union occupied the northern portion. Kim started to gradually install a communist temporary government with the help of the Soviet Union.
