At this place, saltwater flows into these sinkholes and disappears within the ground. The flow of the water had been wont to operate 2 water mills within the space. The primary one was put in 1835 throughout a people's territory. For an extended time, folks had tried to work out wherever the saltwater flows to till in 1963 Austrian geologists known by running dye into the water, that the saltwater that disappears within the ground, crosses the island underground and reappears once 14 days on the opposite aspect of the island, flowing through lake Melissani at one meter on top of water level and from there into the ocean.

The lake is concerning 164 meters long and 35 meters wide. If you style the water you'll notice that it's briny water, 60% seawater, and 40% freshwater. The saltwater, returning from Katavothres, is enriched by the numerous underground fresh deposits within the karsts and enters Melissani Lake, flowing through the lake to the closed part of the cave, wherever it exits the cave on its means into the ocean.
