Lecompton
Between 1855 and 1861, Lecompton served as Kansas' territorial capital. The town was known as the political birthplace of the American Civil War, as well as for its growing opposition to African-American slavery. Lecompton is now one of Kansas' most popular day trips. It was even named one of the state's best small towns by Kansas! magazine readers in 2016. Touring the town's three museums is the best way to learn about its history: the preserved Constitution Hall, a National Historic Landmark, and the Territorial Capital Museum, which displays Civil War-era artifacts.
If you want to learn more about the town's complicated history, Lecompton hosts from January through March the “Bleeding Kansas Series”, a series of talks and dramatic interpretations on the violent and territorial civil war of Kansas and the nation. After exploring historic sites as part of the city’s walking tour, visitors can have lunch at the homestyle Aunt Netter’s Cafe.
