Lijjat
Shri Mahila Griha Udyog Lijjat Papad is a remarkable Indian women's worker cooperative that has played a significant role in empowering women by providing employment opportunities. The organization was started in 1959 by seven Gujarati women in Mumbai with a seed capital of only Rs.80 ($80 in today's money).
Lijjat produces a variety of items, with papad being its most renowned product. The papad comes in fourteen flavors such as lasan, moong, mirch, Punjabi, and urad. In addition to papad, Lijjat manufactures khakhra, appalam, masala, vadi, gehu atta (wheat flour), bakery products, and chapati. Lijjat operates several divisions and manufacturing units including the Flour Division in Vashi, the Masala Division and Quality Control Laboratory in Cotton Green, the Printing Division in Cotton Green, and an Advertising Division.
One of the key factors behind Lijjat's success is its focus on standardization. By ensuring that all the papads it produces have the same taste and quality, Lijjat has been able to build a loyal customer base and expand its distribution channels both in India and globally.
