In Freeport, Maine, its namesake, hunter, and fisherman Leon Leonwood Bean, established L.L.Bean in 1912. The Maine Hunting Shoe, originally known as duck boots and subsequently as Bean Boots, was the only product the business sold when it started out as a one-room operation.

With the use of lightweight leather uppers and rubber soles, Bean created a waterproof boot that he sold to hunters. He assembled a list of non-resident Maine hunters, wrote a detailed mail-order circular, set up shop in his brother's Freeport basement, and launched a massive mail-order company. By 1912, he had established a four-page mail-order catalog through which he was selling the Bean Boot, which is still a pillar of the business's outdoor image today.
