Martha's Vineyard
Martha's Vineyard, a Massachusetts island, is located just south of Cape Cod in the Atlantic. It is a long-standing New England summer colony with harbor towns and lighthouses, sandy beaches and agriculture. It can only be reached by boat or plane. Vineyard Haven, on the island's eastern extremity, serves as a ferry terminal and the island's commercial core. Oak Bluffs is known for its Carpenter Gothic houses and its unique carousel.
For more than a century, this triangle-shaped island, located about 8 miles off the coast of Cape Cod, Massachusetts, has been a secret summer retreat for the rich and famous. The "Hollywood East" reputation is still strong today, thanks to frequent visitors such as former President Barack Obama, David Letterman, and Bill Murray, among many others. Despite the all-star summer roster, the island has a laid-back vibe.
The opportunity to let their hair down for a long weekend is what draws Vineyard visitors off the ship. Sure, some areas of the island, such as Chilmark, have exorbitantly priced summer houses and restaurants. Low-key towns and villages like Vineyard Haven and Menemsha, on the other hand, are still primarily focused on their marine industry and provide a more informal atmosphere. Even the island's most popular souvenir, a Black Dog hoodie, is casual. So ditch the stilettos in favor of your ugliest flat sandals, and keep your calm when you spot some movie stars in Edgartown; everyone deserves a taste of Vineyard heaven.
