Massachusetts Institute of Technology

In Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) is a private land-grant research institution. MIT was founded in 1861 and has since played an important role in the development of contemporary technology and research, ranking among the world's top academic institutions. It was established in response to the United States' expanding industrialisation and concentrated on laboratory training in applied science and engineering.


The institute has a more than a mile (1.6 km) urban campus that runs alongside the Charles River and includes a number of major off-campus facilities such as the MIT Lincoln Laboratory, the Bates Center, and the Haystack Observatory, as well as affiliated laboratories such as the Broad and Whitehead Institutes.

Since then, the institution has played an important role in the advancement of many elements of engineering, contemporary science, and mathematics.
