Memorial University
Memorial University was founded in 1925, before its home province became a part of Canada, and has provided for-credit distance education since 1969. It is also the largest university in Atlantic Canada, with over 475 degrees, diplomas, and certificate programs in various specialties, including business administration, marine and maritime studies, education, criminology, food safety, human kinetics, and nursing.
Memorial University is a Canadian leader in remote and online learning, with over 50 years of expertise in delivering courses over distance. Online courses and programs allow for flexible scheduling while offering all of the reputation and benefits of a residential university at a lower cost.
While the majority of programs are entirely online, some are given in what the school refers to as "mixed mode," which combines 75 percent online and some on-campus components.
All online courses are delivered using the Brightspace (D2L) learning management system, which allows you to submit assignments, complete quizzes, participate in discussion forums and class chats, and email teachers all in one place.
Courses may also use a range of resources, including video conferencing, interactive multimedia, and other learning tools, to offer course material in an interesting and accessible manner. Memorial's online learning program is meant to be as flexible as possible. Most courses are unscheduled and designed to facilitate self-directed learning.
While self-directed, online courses are designed to encourage meaningful interaction with course content, faculty, and classmates while maintaining the necessary flexibility. Instructors and students meet on a regular basis to provide feedback and assess academic progress, and courses are structured with locations that promote effective involvement.
Memorial University's Brightspace platform features "online rooms" where students can attend office hours or talks, as well as gather for group projects, language practice, role play, and collaborative work.
