Misery
"Misery" is another psychological horror novel by Stephen King. It was first published in 1987 and has since become one of King's most iconic and frightening works. The story centers around the character Paul Sheldon, a successful novelist known for his romance novels featuring the character Misery Chastain.
The story takes a dark turn when Paul gets into a car accident during a snowstorm. He is rescued by Annie Wilkes, a seemingly kind nurse and an avid fan of his work. She takes Paul to her remote home to nurse him back to health. However, Paul soon discovers that Annie is not the kind person she appears to be. She holds Paul captive and forces him to rewrite his latest novel, punishing him ruthlessly for any disobedience.
The author focuses on the intense mental struggle between the prisoner and captor. Through this, he highlights issues of obsession, manipulation, and the limits of creativity and human endurance. The novel is a horrifying discovery of the dark extremes of human behavior and the lengths to which obsession can drive a person. "Misery" is a masterclass in suspense and psychological horror and will haunt readers long after the story has ended.
