In the 1870s, Mitsubishi's predecessor, the Tsukumo Shokai Shipping Company, used the triangular chestnut symbol on the ship's flag, from which the Mitsubishi logo evolved into the three-diamond symbol today. The logo comes from the three-layered chestnut crest of Yataro Iwasaki, the founder of Tsukumo Shokai, and the three oak leaf crest of the Yamanouchi family of the Tosa Clan. Records show that the name Mitsubishi Corporation was established later.
