Nata Bird Sanctuary
As the only protected reserve in the northeastern periphery of Sowa Pan, Nata Bird Sanctuary is a community-managed project. This avian sanctuary opened in 1993 with the objective of wildlife conservation. The local people not only relocated their cattle of about 3,500 heads to adjacent land but also built a network of dirt roads.UNESCO has recognized the Nata Bird Sanctuary as one of the “largest breeding of lesser and greater flamingos in the world”.
The Nata Bird Sanctuary is one of only three nesting places for African flamingos. After the rainy season, when the pan receives influent flow from the Nata River, enormous amounts of water birds have their breeding grounds here. Many pelicans and over 250.000 flamingos can then be found here. Overall, 165 different bird species can be found within the sanctuary. Apart from birds, many antelopes like kudu, oryx, springbok and many more are found in the Nata Bird Sanctuary. Visitors can stay at Nata Lodge or on the campsite close to the park entrance.
