Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro Abeokuta (Nigeria)
The Neuropsychiatric Hospital Aro Abeokuta is a 537-bed federal mental health care facility with a long history dating back to its inception as Nigeria's first purpose-built psychiatric hospital. The hospital was built in 1954 to replace an asylum that had been operating on the site for ten years.
The modern mental health hospital is dedicated to providing high-quality mental health care, education, and research in a welcoming setting that encourages community involvement and international collaboration. A comprehensive and multi-disciplinary service for the assessment, treatment and rehabilitation of drug-dependent people is one of the center's main focuses.
In addition to several specialized service delivery innovations, the hospital recently launched a statewide program of integrating mental health care into primary health care for accessible and affordable treatment of priority mental health conditions at PHC centers in all 20 local government areas of Ogun state.
