North York Moors, England

The Moors' untamed, rocky scenery and typical British weather aren't for everyone, but they're ideal for individuals who love fresh air and plenty of greenery. The stunning views from the comparatively flat peaks of the North York Moors will stay with you. It's big-sky country with wide-open vistas and a tremendous sense of spaciousness. Spend the day photographing the undulating hills and patchwork fields before retiring to one of the area's historic taverns.

Nothing surpasses the always changing vista from Blakey Ridge, whether it's low-lying fog in the valley or sunlight bursting through the clouds onto the surrounding moorland. Ancient stone crosses and border marks dot the landscape, yet this feels a long distance from anything. Allow time to stand still before entering the historic Lion Inn, a warm and welcoming bar at the highest point in the National Park. If you've walked through hill and dale to get here, the tantalizing food, together with a pint of quality brew and a great roaring fire, will soon restore your spirits.

Begin with the National Park coast's majestic cliffs and sheltered harbours, particularly from Ravenscar - that breathtaking, sweeping view across Fylingdales Moor and Robin Hood's Bay down to the old, red-roofed smugglers' village is unbeatable, especially on a clear spring or summer day when the light seems to dance off the sea. It's the highest point on the famed off-road Cinder Track coastal multi-user route, so it's a terrific spot to regain your breath and taste the delicacies of Raven Hall afternoon tea before snapping that ideal photograph.
