One - U2

"One" is a song by the Irish rock band U2. It was the third track from the album Achtung Baby (1991), then became the album's third single in February 1992. When it was recorded at the Hansa studio in Berlin, controversy arose between the albums. member on sound effects and technical quality. Even the risk of disbanding was near until they played this song together. "One" was composed by Bono from the arpeggio that guitarist The Edge played in the studio, inspired by the relationship between the members and the German Reunification. Although the band themselves have always emphasized that the lyrics are about "unification" the song is often understood in many different ways.

The single "One" was released for charity to raise funds for HIV/AIDS research. The song peaked at number one on the Irish Singles Chart, as well as the Billboard Album Rock Tracks and Modern Rock Tracks, number seven on the UK Singles Chart, and number ten on the Billboard Hot 100.

The song has 3 versions:

  • The first version is directed by Anton Corbijn in which a son confesses to his father that he is HIV positive. In the music clip, the audience is shocked because Bono wears female clothes to sing for his father. The footage, shot in Berlin, shows the band riding in several Trabant cars.
  • The second version features flowers in bloom, and a herd of buffalo plunging into a cliff. Scattered in many frames are countless small black cards bearing a white One in many different languages. The buffalo scene was inspired by a photo of David Wojnarowicz, a gay artist who died of AIDS. This photo was used by U2 as the cover of the single "One".
  • The third version of the track features Bono in a bar, sipping a cigar and drinking a beer. The lighting and camera angles are creatively arranged, making many people think of Heineken beer ads. However, this is the version closest to the audience because it is often broadcast on MTV.

Meaning: Is “One”, but carries “many” meanings: Based on the main lyrics, it can be surmised that this song is about two men and women. They love each other and have hurt each other, but continue to preserve the relationship. Others, based on the band's production of the album in Germany, see "One" as a healing of the past wounds between East and West Germany when the Berlin Wall fell. However, the most popular conjecture is that the song is about Bono's lifelong relationship with his father, building on the two's experiences when Bono's mother died when he was 14 years old.
