Our Lady of Meritxell Day

Our Lady of Meritxell Day, which honors the country's patron saint, is the most important of Andorra's festivals. The festival of Our Lady of Meritxell takes place on September 8th, which is also called Andorra's national day. Every year on this day, since 1873, the event commemorates the saint by worshiping a replica of Our Lady of Meritxell, which is housed in the Meritxell Church. All stores and businesses close on Our Lady of Meritxell Day.

The Lady of Meritxell legend originated in the late 12th century when locals from Meritxell noticed a wild rose to bloom in January on their journey to Mass in Canillo, with a statue of the Virgin and Child at its base. After that, the statue was moved to Encamp's church. But, surprisingly, it was located under the same wild rose as previously on the next day. As in similar legends elsewhere, the residents of Meritxell regarded this as a sign and decided to build a new chapel in their town after discovering an open space miraculously untouched by the winter snows.

Thousands of pilgrims from all over the country flock to the Sanctuary at Meritxell. Following a solemn Mass, the faithful return to their homes for family feasts and to prepare for celebrations in all parishes, which may include a massive torch procession, performances, exhibitions, fireworks, and dances on Our Lady of Meritxell Day.
