Political science is the study of politics from a scientific perspective. It is a social science that studies governance and power structures, as well as political activities, political philosophy, political conduct, and the laws and constitutions that govern them.

India's politics operate under the confines of the country's Constitution. India is a parliamentary democratic republic in which the Prime Minister of India is the head of government and the President of India is the head of state. It is based on the federal government structure, despite the fact that the term is not used in the Constitution. India has a dual polity structure, which is federal in nature and comprises of a central authority and states at the periphery. The Constitution establishes both the central and state governments' organizational rights and limits; it is well-known, fluid (the Preamble to the Constitution being stiff and dictating further revisions to the Constitution), and regarded paramount, i.e. all national laws must correspond to it.

A bicameral legislature is established, with an upper house, the Rajya Sabha (Council of States), representing the Indian federation's states, and a lower body, the Lok Sabha (House of the People), representing the Indian people as a whole. The Supreme Court is the head of an independent judiciary established by the Constitution. The court's mission is to uphold the Constitution, resolve disputes between the federal government and the states, and strike down any federal or state laws that are unconstitutional.
