Purple Rain
American musician Prince and his supporting band the Revolution are the authors of the song Purple Rain. It was released as the third single from the album and serves as the title tune for the same-titled 1984 soundtrack album, which in turn serves as the soundtrack album for the same-titled 1984 film starring Prince. A power ballad, the song incorporates elements of rock, R&B, gospel, and orchestral music. This song now is one of the best '80s songs of all time.
When "Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go" by Wham! dethroned Purple Rain from the top spot, "Purple Rain" rose to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for two weeks. In Belgium and the Netherlands, it peaked at No. 1. It is regarded as one of Prince's hallmark songs and has received a Gold certification from the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). "Purple Rain" climbed to No. 1 on the US and UK iTunes Charts after Prince's passing in April 2016, which allowed it to re-enter the Billboard Hot 100 where it peaked at No. 4. Additionally, it reentered the UK Singles Chart at No. 6, moving up two spots from its previous peak of No. 8. Around a week after Prince's passing, "Purple Rain" rose to No. 1 in France, where it first peaked at No.12.
