Research Data Management and Sharing by The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and The University of Edinburgh
This course will give students an overview of how to handle and share research data. Learners will be able to recognize the components of good data management plans after completing this course, as well as understand the diversity of data and their management needs across the research data lifecycle. They will also be familiar with best practices for working with data, such as data organization, documentation, storage, and security. Learners will also gain an understanding of the motivation for archiving and sharing data, as well as how to evaluate the reliability of repositories.
Data producers are now being required by an increasing number of funding agencies, journals, and other stakeholders to share, archive, and plan for the management of their data. Researchers and information workers will need data management and curation knowledge and abilities to enable the long-term preservation, access, and reuse of data in order to meet these objectives. Data management can also aid in the optimization of research outputs, the expansion of research impact, and the encouragement of open scientific inquiry.
Learners will be better equipped to handle data across the whole research data lifecycle, from project planning through the end of the study, when data should ideally be shared and made available within a reliable repository, after finishing this course.
The Curating Research Assets and Data Using Lifecycle Education (CRADLE) Project at the University of Edinburgh collaborated with EDINA to create this course.
