Colombian singer Shakira Isabel Mebarak Ripoll was born on 2 February 1977. She was raised in Barranquilla and is known as the "Queen of Latin Music" for her wide range of musical styles. At the age of 13, she made her recording debut with Sony Music Colombia. With the release of her fifth album, Laundry Service (2001), which has global sales of over 13 million copies, she broke into the English-language market. The album helped her establish herself as a top crossover performer, helped by the success of her singles "Whenever, Wherever" and "Underneath Your Clothes" on a global scale.
Shakira was referred to as a "pioneer" who expanded the international appeal of Latino vocalists by Broadcast Music, Inc.
She was rewarded in 2011 with the Latin Recording Academy Person of the Year and Harvard Foundation Artist of the Year awards for her charitable work with her Barefoot Foundation and her contributions to music. In 2011, she was named to the President's Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics in the United States.
