Swayambhunath Stupa

Swayambhunath Stupa, also known as the Monkey Temple, is a really ancient and important spot in Kathmandu, Nepal. It's up on this hill, giving you a fantastic view of the whole valley. Here, you can not only find breathtaking scenery and ancient Buddhist vibes but also encounter a bunch of adorable monkeys hanging out. These little guys are everywhere, adding a funny touch to the whole scene.

Picture this: a huge golden spire crowns a white dome, visible from miles away in the Kathmandu Valley. It's like this big, shining beacon, catching everyone's eye. Records suggest it was already an important Buddhist place by the 5th century AD, but legends say it goes way, way back.

Now, the stupa's got these eyes painted on each side. There's this feeling like they're watching over everyone with wisdom and compassion, sending out good vibes in all directions. There's no nose between these eyes—instead, there's the number one in the Nepali alphabet, showing that enlightenment comes through following the Buddhist way.

Around the Swayambhunath Stupa, there are lots of shrines, temples, and religious stuff. It's a mix of Hindu and Buddhist things. There's even a temple for Harati, a Hindu goddess adopted by Buddhists for protection from diseases like smallpox.

People from different beliefs visit here—Hindus, Vajrayana Buddhists, and Newari Buddhists. Every morning, before the sun's up, hundreds of people climb 365 steps to reach the top of the hill. They circle the stupa, spinning prayer wheels and paying respects. It's a ritual that means a lot to many.
