The university began operations in Khujand in 1931 with one educational building, and today there are 13 educational buildings. The gradual development of a material and technical foundation has aided in the expansion of specialities, departments, and faculties. There was a shortage of professionals from other institutions in the Soviet Union at the outset of the university's founding in the 1930s. If 32 full-time teachers (2 teachers, candidates, and associate professors) worked in 19 university departments to teach students in four disciplines in the academic year 1931-1937, this number climbed to 51 in the academic year 2020-2021 in the existing departments. 450 full-time instructors, including 7 academicians of the Republic of Tajikistan's Academy of Sciences, 3 associate members of the Republic of Tajikistan's Academy of Sciences, 47 doctors of sciences, 57 professors, and 151 candidates for the Republic of Tajikistan's Academy of Sciences.
