Pam Grossman and her colleagues advocate for a practice-based teacher education method that identifies "core practices" of teaching and helps rookie teachers in learning how to successfully perform them in "Teaching Core Practices in Teacher Education". Facilitating whole-class conversation, stimulating student thought, and upholding classroom norms are all examples of core activities. The authors believe that rather than emphasizing topic knowledge, teacher education should focus more on helping teachers develop these professional skills.
The book is based on the work of a group of thirteen institutions' teacher educators who are dedicated to articulating and practicing pedagogies to assist rookie teachers in developing these fundamental practices in support of ambitious and equitable education. Their goal is to help teacher educators learn from one other across institutions, curriculum domains, and grade levels. Outside of conventional teacher education programs, the book discusses methods to support teacher learning.
