The Newbury Boston

The Newbury Boston occupies a historic building that first opened as the Ritz Carlton Hotel in 1927, on one of Boston's most picturesque corners. Its location at the bustling intersection of Newbury and Arlington streets provides prime views of Boston Common (founded in 1634) from the lush and manicured Public Garden side of the green. The Taj Boston was under different ownership prior to a two-year renovation and reopening as The Newbury in May 2021. The 2019-2021 renovation revamped all shared guest spaces, added several rooms and suites, and restored the historic ballrooms.

The hotel's 286 rooms include 90 suites, some with wood-burning fireplaces (birch logs provided) and expansive views of the downtown skyline across the park. With a minimum of 500 square feet and rates starting at $564 per night, all rooms are impressively spacious for this area of town. Views are either Park or City, as specified when booking. For high-floor views, massive marble bathrooms with double sinks plus a separate shower and tub, and plenty of space, book the Mansion or Corner House suites (about 1,500 square feet each). For a more modest splurge, book a lower-floor Grand Suite, preferably on the park side so you can feel like you're nestled among the trees. Arlington Street can be noisy, but suite bedrooms are set back from the street, so you won't hear a thing at night.

The staff is knowledgeable and friendly without being too formal. Bellhops will greet you at the door and offer to carry your bags; requests for an ice bucket or in-room dining are met with prompt and efficient service. Order breakfast to your room for the memorable experience of white-tablecloth service (don't miss the lobster eggs Benedict) set against a breathtaking view of the park.
